Conor McGregor: Doubt Me Now Doc of the Week

Conor McGregor: Doubt Me Now

He’s one of the most famous sportsmen on the planet and he’s about to fight someone many consider to be the greatest boxer ever to step into the ring. It’s Conor McGregor v Floyd Mayweather, in case you haven’t heard. This is the story of McGregor’s career to date and preparation for the big bout later this month. BT Sport 3, Thur, August 17th 23.00.

Some call it the fight to end all fights, the bout of this or any other century. Others believe it is nothing more than a cash cow for the two protagonists. Whatever you believe, there is no doubting the massive worldwide interest that the meeting between UFC lightweight champion McGregor and undefeated five-weight boxing champion Mayweather has generated.

The pair are set to meet in a 12-round boxing match in Las Vegas on August 26th. It has been dubbed ‘The Money Fight’, with rumours suggesting that Mayweather could be set to net more than $100m and McGregor $75m for their efforts. The pair have embarked upon a whirlwind multi-city publicity tour across two continents to promote the event which looks set to break all previous pay-per-view box office records.

Notorious

Conor ‘The Notorious’ McGregor has taken the sporting world by storm in his relatively short career. The Crumlin-born 29-year-old made his professional debut in 2008 and was a double MMA champion before joining UFC.

Well known for his pre-bout trash talk banter, McGregor is one of the few who can back it up in the octagon and was the first man to hold two belts simultaneously when he claimed the lightweight crown after defeating Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205. He was already featherweight champion after knocking out Jose Aldo in just 13 seconds at UFC 194, in what remains the quickest title fight in UFC history.

McGregor was later forced to relinquish his featherweight belt in keeping with UFC rules, but there was no doubting that he was the biggest name in the sport. It was no surprise then that his name began to be linked with fights outside the confines of UFC and when the prospect of a boxing match against such a legendary figure as Mayweather, a man who had defeated all the great names across five divisions throughout an illustrious undefeated 49-fight career, it proved too difficult to resist and a deal was agreed back in March.

Narrated by noted boxing and MMA journalist Gareth A Davies, Conor McGregor: Doubt Me Now looks at the Irishman’s meteoric rise to stardom and assesses his chances of success against Mayweather. Davies speaks to a number of the leading figures in the combat sports world, including former World champion boxer Ricky Hatton, to get their take on the big fight.

Written off time and again throughout his career, can McGregor astound the critics and hand Mayweather his first ever professional defeat? We shall find out on August 26th.
